Let’s just start by saying that Woody Allen is no Broadway star. It can be surmised, however, that he harbours feelings of affection for the musicals of George Gershwin. The fact that his films are not musical-like is another matter. This is because works in the genre do not traditionally revolve around depressed Jews, silly girls, filthy rich lawyers, shrinks and newly released prison inmates. However, this is still a Woody Allen movie. So fear not, as the master does not refrain from indulging himself. It’s what is called a ‘jukebox musical’, meaning it’s constructed from existing songs. In musical terms, it takes us back to Allen’s favourite era, the ’20s and ’30s. We would like to draw the attention of viewers with sophisticated tastes to the fact that the violinist playing a 1929 musical hit is not a lookalike of Itzhak Perlman, but Perlman himself.
